Glossary - Twink

The term twink is used to describe a player who deceives other players regarding his or her achievements in the game. The term is more common for players of role-playing games. The act of deception in such instances is referred to as twinking. When it comes to defining a twink clearly, the exact meaning may vary depending on the game.

A twink in MMO games

In regards to an MMO or massively multiplayer online game, a twink is someone who gains high-level equipment through the assistance of a character that is of higher level. This happens when the player of a higher rank gives the player a piece of lower-level equipment that would be otherwise impossible to attain at a low level. A twink could also be observed in role-playing games (RPG). The most common way of twinking occurs when low-level players use in-game currency to purchase more powerful equipment that would otherwise only be available to higher level players.

Preventing twinking

Since being a twink is considered cheating, most games put restrictions on their items. MMO game development teams place these restrictions to prevent new players from using powerful items and disturbing the balance of the game. They do this by having a mechanism that requires a player to reach a minimum ability or level score to use the equipment. This, however, does not eradicate the problem fully. Most players dodge the restriction by having such gear and virtual currency handed down to them during gameplay by more powerful players. Some games try to prevent a twink from powering up and using more powerful items by making specific items tied to characters. This practice is more common for potent weapons and armor, that could only be attained by the most skilled player making the items undetachable.
